AI can help designers create better UI and design systems, but only when the human prepares the brief, flow, rules, and structure first.

AI design is not only about writing a prompt.

I know prompts are important. But if we only say “make me a dashboard” or “create a modern landing page”, the result will usually be random.

Maybe it looks nice at first. Maybe the colors are good. Maybe the layout feels clean.

But real UI/UX design is not only a nice screen.

It is a system.

A prompt is not a product plan

When we work with AI, it is easy to think that the prompt is the whole job.

But for me, the prompt is only the visible part.

Before the prompt, there should be a clear product idea.

Who is the user? What problem are we solving? What is the main action? What happens when something goes wrong? What should the user trust?

If these questions are not clear, AI will still create something. But it may create a beautiful mess.

This is why I think AI design needs human prep first.

Good preparation makes AI useful

AI can help a lot when the designer gives it structure.

Before asking for screens, I like to prepare simple things:

product goal

user flow

main pages

components

states

content tone

spacing and typography rules

what AI can decide and what I must decide

This may sound slower.

But it is actually faster.

Because without preparation, we spend time fixing the same problems again and again.

The AI changes the button style. Then it changes spacing. Then it changes the card radius. Then it forgets the previous layout.

At that moment, AI is not helping. It is creating cleanup work.

Start with atoms, then grow

For UI design, I think an atomic approach works very well with AI.

Do not start by asking for the whole product at once.

Start smaller.

First define the basics: colors, type, spacing, buttons, inputs, cards, navigation, icons, and states.

Then move to components.

Then sections.

Then templates.

Then pages.

Then the full product experience.

This step-by-step flow gives AI less room to guess. It also gives the designer more control.

When the foundation is clear, AI can create better variations. It can help with faster exploration, but the output still feels connected to the same product.

Design systems become instructions for AI

A design system is not only a file for designers anymore.

It is becoming an instruction layer for AI tools.

If your design system is clear, AI has something to follow.

If your system is weak, AI will invent its own rules.

That is where problems begin.

One screen has one style. Another screen has another style. The same component appears in three different ways. The product starts to look fast, but not stable.

This is why I wrote before that AI design needs more than faster screens.

Speed is good. But consistency is better.

The designer is still the editor

AI can create options. But the designer must edit.

The designer decides what is useful, what is too much, what is confusing, and what should be removed.

This is not a small job.

Good product design is often about saying no.

No to extra buttons. No to fake complexity. No to UI that looks nice but does not help the user.

AI can help us move faster, but it should not replace judgment.

I also wrote about this in AI UX Is Not About Prompts Anymore. AI UX is about control, feedback, trust, and clear flows.

My takeaway

If you want better UI design with AI, do not start with a giant prompt.

Start with preparation.

Prepare the goal. Prepare the flow. Prepare the design system basics. Prepare the rules. Then ask AI to help you build step by step.

AI can be very powerful for UI/UX and product design.

But it works best when the human brings structure first.

For me, the future is not “AI will design everything”.

The future is more like this:

Designers who can prepare better systems will get better results from AI.

AI can make UI design faster, but without design systems, context, and human review, it can also waste time and tokens.

The post AI Design Needs More Than Faster Screens first appeared on Burak Poryaz - Web ve Mobil Arayüz Tasarımı - UX Ui Tasarım.

AI is not killing UI/UX designers.

It is making screen production faster. That part is true.

But I think the real value of a designer is not only creating screens. The real value is making good decisions before the screen exists.

This becomes even more important with AI.

Fast screens are not enough

AI tools can generate layouts, flows, components, and visual ideas very quickly.

This is useful. But speed can also create a new problem.

If the project has no clear design system, no component rules, no product logic, and no human direction, the AI will produce many things that look okay but do not work together.

Then the designer spends time fixing everything.

At that point, AI is not saving time. It is creating cleanup work.

Preparation matters more now

Before using AI in a real product design project, we need preparation.

For me, this means:

clear product goal

defined user flows

design system basics

components and states

spacing and typography rules

content tone

what AI can decide and what humans must decide

The bigger the project is, the more important this preparation becomes.

Small mistakes at the start can become big time loss later.

AI needs a design system

A design system is not only for designers anymore.

It also becomes a language for AI tools.

If the system is clear, AI can help with faster variations, better consistency, and less random output.

If the system is weak, the AI may generate many different styles, many broken patterns, and many decisions that do not fit the product.

This is why I think AI design is not only about prompts. I wrote about this before in AI UX Is Not About Prompts Anymore.

Human touch is still needed

In a real project, there is always context.

Business goals, user needs, edge cases, brand rules, technical limits, accessibility, and product history all matter.

AI does not fully understand these things by default.

A designer still needs to review, guide, reject, simplify, and connect the pieces.

This is where human touch becomes important.

Not as decoration. As judgment.

Bad preparation wastes tokens

There is also a practical problem: token waste.

If the brief is weak, the design system is missing, and the product context is unclear, you will keep asking the AI to fix the same problems again and again.

That costs time. It also costs tokens.

Good preparation is not slow. It is the thing that makes AI useful.

My takeaway

AI makes UI production faster.

But product design still needs structure.

The future designer will not only ask AI to create screens. The future designer will prepare the system, define the rules, guide the output, and make the final decisions.

That is why AI does not remove design thinking.

It makes design thinking more visible.

AI UX is moving beyond prompt boxes. Good AI products need control, feedback, trust, and clear user decisions.

For a long time, many AI products had one main interface: a prompt box.

You write something. The AI answers. Maybe you try again.

This was useful at the start. But I do not think this is enough anymore.

AI UX is not only about prompts now. It is about control, feedback, trust, and clear product flows.

The prompt box is only the beginning

A prompt box is flexible. That is good.

But it also hides many things from the user.

What can this AI do? What changed? Can I undo it? Can I choose another version? Can I see why this result happened?

If the product does not answer these questions, the user may feel lost.

Good AI UX needs visible control

When I use an AI product, I do not want only a smart answer. I want to feel that I am still in control.

For me, this means simple things:

clear preview before applying a change

undo and history

different versions to compare

confidence or quality signals

human approval before important actions

This is where product design becomes very important.

AI can create fast. But the interface should help the user decide well.

Figma and Adobe show the direction

Recent AI design tools are moving in this direction.

Figma talks about AI that works inside the design workflow, not only as a separate chat box. Figma Make also focuses on generating and editing UI with more direct control.

Adobe Firefly is also moving toward an AI studio with more context, reusable elements, and creative agent features.

This tells me one thing: the next step is not just better prompts. The next step is better product systems around AI.

Designers still matter

AI can make more people create interfaces. I think this is good.

But more output also means more noise.

Designers will still need taste, structure, and judgment. We need to decide what should be automated, what should stay manual, and where the user needs more clarity.

This is also why I want to write more about AI and product design on this blog.

My takeaway

If you are designing an AI product, do not stop at the prompt box.

Design the states around it. Design the controls. Design mistakes. Design trust. Design the moment where the user says: yes, this is the result I want.

That is AI UX now.

And if you are a designer, keep showing your work too. Tools can help, but sharing and feedback still build your taste. I wrote about this idea while launching ShotSender, my free Figma plugin for publishing Dribbble shots.
